The History and Variety of Limousines

Limousine service is not a modern luxury, but has been around since the early days when automobiles were first invented. Just as with any car, limousines have evolved quite a lot over the last century. The first limousine was created in 1902 and had to compartments, one for the chauffer and the other for the passengers. The first stretched limousine was created in 1928 and was mostly used in the transportation of famous people.

Typical limousines of today share certain characteristics. Most have a lengthened wheel base. The traditional limousine color is black or white, however, in recent years, color has become more flexible. The two compartments are kept separate, even to the point of being sound proof, so that the chauffer cannot listen in to the conversations of the passengers. In order to communicate there is either an intercom system built in, or the window that separates the two compartments can be lowered.

For the majority of the first century of limo use, they were reserved for the ultra wealthy and special occasions such as weddings, or other formal events. When a limo drove past, people would get excited wondering what celebrity had just driven past. Recently, limo companies have begun competing in the taxi business. If you needed a taxi, but could hire a Napels limo for only slightly more, then why not go in style.

Like most industries, when the economy is down, business slows down, and to compensate, limo rental rates lower significantly to compete. The most popular event limo is the stretched hummer which can seat as many as twenty five people, and certainly catches the eye of those you drive past.
